Aliwal North is a small town which lies on the border between the Free State and Eastern Cape and boasts 2 hot mineral springs which continue to draw visitors. Today the town is mainly a farming community producing maize, beef, dairy, wheat, and wool. Besides the hot springs, local attractions include the Oviston Nature Reserve, Tussen die Riviere Game Reserve, Aliwal North Museum, the Kerkplein Museum, and the Garden of Remembrance.
