Highover Wildlife Sanctuary is an eco-adventure destination in KwaZulu-Natal that offers you an adrenaline rush as you shoot with white river rapids, experience the thrill of seeing the endangered blue swallows in flight, opt to enjoy the spectacular indigenous tree trail, or relax with a good book.

Highover is an ideal base from which to explore the southern Natal Midlands. This might include Sani Pass, trips on the steam trains, Byrne Village, the Southern Berg and the Umkomaas Valley.

Highover Wildlife Sanctuary offers various self-catering accommodation options including a Lodge, Stone Cottages, Riverside Chalets, Bunkhouses and Camping sites.

We also welcome day visitors who wish to spend a day at the river, walk our tree-spotting trails, view game and birds or simply relax outdoors. Bring your picnic basket or braai equipment along and spend a relaxing day in the bush camp.

Activities include hiking trails, fly fishing, 4x4 trails, tubing, swimming, off-road and quad-biking tracks, mountain biking trails, and lots of picnic spots.

Suggestions: clean the thatch roof so spiders do not pose a threat and hornets. I had spoken to the manager about the hornets as they were flying around aggressively all over highover- the toilets/bathrooms, the other peoples stone cottages.. Instead of chicken wire use a shade cloth or something that keeps bugs out but still allows ventilation.even the communal bathrooms had spiders dropping down from the chicken wire while using the toilet/ bath. My Hubby suggests they have a small tearoom supplying essentials like milk bread, water , ice. Mb some sweets for special times like easter. It would have been nice if we could have bought easter eggs from them as the roads are treacherous to drive along if you don't have a 4x4 . As people don't really want to drive such a distance to the shops. It would make it super special to bring the holiday spirit there for holidays like easter and christmas. Like for easter on easter sunday if they know there are families staying arrange an easter egg hunt. For christmas mb put up a wreath on the doors. For campers have the option of renting the gas cooker and gas cylinder. The riverside chalet was beautiful and the sound of the river relaxing but the attack of insects and bugs detracted from the relaxation and made it difficult to enjoy our stay fully. We would probably camp next time for bug control.

STT disappointing and overgrown.

Run down, bad service by

It is with disappointment that we found the once popular Highover in a state of disrepair and poor service. During our 3 day stay from 27 to 30 Dec we were at times the only visitors in the resort. Ablutions are in disrepair, some days the "donkeys" for hot water were not lit and campers had to do this themselves, rubbish bins were not emptied once, ablutions were not cleaned once, firewood which was requested did not arrive and the reception office is virtually non functional. Campsites grass was not cut and chalets look dirty. We will certainly not visit again.

Peace and tranquility by

Stayed five days in Stone Cottage 3. Beautiful, peaceful setting near the Umkomaas River. Many birds. Perfect peace.
