Düsternbrook Safari Guest Farm

Düsternbrook Safari Guest Farm

Windhoek Area, Khomas, Namibia
Self-catering, Safari from R 155
R 155

The oldest guest farm in Namibia, with its spectacular view, lies just 50 km north of Windhoek, on the way to Etosha, Damaraland, Skeleton Coast and the Namib desert. Duesterbrook is a member of the Namibian Hotel Association and registered with the Namibia Tourism Board.

We cater only for the individual traveller. The old colonial buildings (1909) have been carefully renovated and extended to keep the flair of the by-gone times. Complimented by inviting rooms, a tasty cuisine and the personal service is brought to you by a team of individual players.

Adventure excellent cheetah and leopard drives and see about 15 different species of game and rich birdlife on the safari game drive. A early morning special mountain drive with different view points and the possibility to see the rare and endemic Hartmann mountain zebra is offered free if you stay two or more nights. Feel space, clean air and tranquility or enjoy four well marked walking trails or horseback riding. Enjoy a swim or the atmosphere around our big pool.

We run and manage the farm in an environmental friendly way and participate in the Namibian eco award. In 2005 and in 2007 we got three and in 2008 we been awarded with four out five flowers. Except for one or two wilderness Lodges we are the only safari guest farm in Namibia with such a high rating. If your senses like the mix of historical flair, eco management, pure nature and space, conservation of rare and endangered species, adventure, personal service, individual people and a family atmosphere, than you should be our guest.

Number of rooms: six double units and one single. All rooms are individually furnished, partly antique, partly specially made furniture. Limited camping, but what you take in you take out not to create a baboon problem.

Wonderful by

We had such a lovely time at Düsternbrook. The staff is very friendly and helpful. And Johan Vaatz is a real warm host to all his guests.

Not up to standard by

We booked two nights at Davidsdraai as a family, but only stayed one night!! We understand that it is a no luxury unit, but there is no electricity (on website is says electricity supplied via solar panels), no warm water (even with solar panels), no curtains, and probably their oldest beds and linen. We could not prepare a meal as the braai area is outside and it was raining, no other self catering facilities or electricity to cook with. Can't even make a cup of coffee!!
Addition to the curtainless windows are the fact that there is no mosquito netting, thus you can't sleep with the windows open and it gets vety hot and stuffy in the room.
The room has one hanging light, which provides very poor lighting to the rest of the room.
The road to the rooms are very bad, you will need a 4x4.
The area around the chalet is very depressing, didn't see the mentioned river/dam?
We had an unfriendly welcome (didn't greet us) and was generally unhelpful.

Establishments Response:
Thank you for your time to write the review. Even if you were not happy I take notice of the improvements to make which are very valuable. I like to mention some points. You said there is no electricity in the beginning but later you mention the light was very poor, so there was limited electricity. There are in fact two lights one in the room and one above the washbasin. We mention no luxury and there is no luxury. It is like upmarket camping instead of sleeping in a tent you have 4 walls, shower and flush toilet and proper beds. You should have all your camping gear and food yourself so I do not have to supply anything. I guess you misunderstand the concept. But we have a catering box which you can borrow at the reception. If you go to Namibia this time of the year you should know it is hot and it can be rainy. I personally put up the mosquito netting so I do not understand why you say there is none.

We could not get through to their premises by

We were really looking forward to our stay there but due to a heavy big tree in the road to the lodge we did not get to the lodge. We had to go all the way back to Windhoek and booked in at the Protea Hotel just to get a place to stay and it was twice as expensive. I also paid a deposit and would like to know if I can get that back please.
