Die Wa-huis is an historical self-catering cottage located on the farm Matjiesvlei, where farming dates back as far as 1821, which is situated at the foothills of the Swartberg mountains between Calitzdorp and Ladismith. Perfect for a couple, the restored Wa-huis was designed so that guests can enjoy breathtaking views of the lucerne fields, the winding Gamka River and the majestic Swartberg mountain range.

The cottage offers one bedroom furnished with a comfortable double bed and a bathroom with a shower only. A cot is also available on request, and linen and towels are provided. No electricity is provided and a donkey-boiler is used to supply hot water. The kitchen is equipped with a gas stove as well as a gas fridge-freezer, and candles and lamps are also provided. The living room opens onto the veranda, which offers guests lovely views and features a built-in braai area.

Guests looking to explore the surrounds can take a short drive to Calitzdorp, which is known for the production of the country's best port wines. Various walking trails can be found in the Gamkaberg Nature Reserve, the Redstone Hills and at Retreat at Groenfontein and guests can also enjoy birding or viewing the fynbos of the area.

DIE WA-HUIS REVIEWS (93%)

If you want to find solace, peace and quiet, this is the place. No cell phone signal. No electricity. Stars to make your jaw drop and exquisite views. Very clean & comfortable. Practical furnishings and great for the dogs too, so you don't have to stress. Plenty of lanterns & matches supplied. the interior is so well done with period pieces and the old wooden doors that divide the bedroom & living area is just too beautiful. Selma & Bennie are very accommodating hosts. Highly recommended.

We love being far off the grid, which is why the Wa-Huis was heaven to us. Views towards the back of Gamkaskloof in the Swartberg are stupendous. The restored wagon house is beautifully furnished and laid out, with all the amenities you need to self-cater, and there are plenty of oil lamps, candles and battery-lights. There is a lovely west-facing braai and stoep. We did not use the donkey to heat shower water as the water was warm enough for us, nor the indoor fire place, but they would be essential in winter. The friendly pre-stay emails, and the welcome and daily visits by hostess Selma Nel, made us feel vey welcome. I always judge a place on that interaction. The only thing I could recmmend is that a photocopied map of the 4x4 route which doubles as a nicely challenging hiking trail, is put in the cottage (with all those interesting magazines), and that possibly another trail is laid out on the hills behind the cottage. We want to return to also experience the wonderfully shaded and isolated campsite down near the river.
