Ann's Villa is one of the country's oldest coaching inns, built in 1864 in the Eastern Cape. It is a national monument at the foot of the Zuurberg Pass. All self-catering rooms are furnished with bedding and towels, guests only have to bring their own food and drink.

Ann's Villa is an excellent destination for those looking for somewhere historic and interesting, a place to immerse themsleves in 19th century South Africa. The house can be booked as an entire unit or as individual rooms.

Guests can shop in the original 1864 general goods store or explore the history of blacksmithing and wheel-making in the blacksmith museum. Meditate on the past and future in a special room dedicated to fully experiencing the incredible peace and quiet of the place. In the evening guests can play some snooker and games.

Fully researched history is available as are self-guided walks of some of the rich medicinal flora of the region. Ramble through 1000 acres of biodiversity and enjoy the 200 species of birds recorded in the area, plus small mammals and kudu. Guests can also visit the historic graveyard.

Awesome stay in an historic icon by

A fantastic getaway in a lovely, historic but cosy villa. Interesting history; fascinating tour of an authentic blacksmith workshop complete with the original implements and the old shop/post office. Onsite caretaker very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. If you have a regular vehicle follow the directions given in the booking (via the highway onto R335); don't attempt to come via the Zuurburg Pass without a 4x4 or at least a bakkie of some kind as this road is rather degraded and very rough on a city car.

An interesting visit by

I enjoyed the history of the place and the tour of the Blacksmith's and shop.

As you are aware we spent some time at Ann's Villa during March 2016 but I cannot describe how disappionted I was. If I ownded the place I would not invite anyone to stay. It is a disgrace. You are confrunted on arrival by a man who states he is the "Manager" but I wonder if he knows the meaning of the word. The uppersheet on our bok was, in fact, a duvet cover. The walls looked as though they were falling down. the repairs to our room, in particular, was patchy, to say the least.

If you rate your B+Bs then I would rate this particular one as -10.

Establishments response:

It is most unfortunate that this guest did not ask for a refund and leave immediately as she found so much fault with duvets and the manager and the walls.  Ann's Villa is an historical building where the patina of its history is retained and appreciated by those who enjoy history and authenticity. If those are not qualities that interest people then the Villa is not a suitable destination for them.

Solitude - nervous by

Old - very old. Maintenance is basic as is the furniture.

Quick overnight stay by

Loved the tour of the blacksmiths shop, the staff were friendly and helpful ?
