The view is absolutely incredible, overlooking the calm seas while being surrounded by the wonderful sounds of nature. The staff were very accommodating and hospitable. Thanks for the amazing experience. Leaving by Kim Norwood-young 08 January 2018 I booked a family log cabin for my family of 4 for one night, more than a month prior to our visit. Upon arrival, it took the disinterested reception staff half an hour to find our booking - even though there are only two family log cabins. This set the tone for our entire visit. Once shown to our room, it took the receptionist a further 5 minutes to confirm that the key worked and was indeed the correct one for our room.
At this point, we weren't Too concerned, as - apart from the broken mirror and window - the room looked neat and clean. Our major surprise was to come that evening when, after dinner in town and an admittedly beautiful sunset at the Wild Farm Bar, we conducted our evening ablutions and went to bed.
Let's start with the ablutions. When booking, I was aware that I had not selected an en-suite room and that I would need to share bathroom facilities. No problem. I assumed that we would share with the other family log cabin - so 8 people in total to a single bathroom - and this seemed reasonable. As it turns out, this assumption was a grave mistake. The two toilets and one shower (with a toilet and shower in one room, thus limiting access) are indeed shared between the family log cabins. And the dorms. And a double room. There were 3 outdoor showers, but heaven knows what the morning toilet rush was like. Thankfully, we managed to avoid it - but more on that later.
On to bedtime. Our family log room was equipped with a double bed and a bunk bed. Unfortunately, there was no ladder provided for the top bunk bed, nor a safety railing. But my son is an adventurous sort and decided to brave it, while his baby sister was relegated to the bottom bunk. My husband and I settled in for the night on the double bed. Or so we thought. Never before have I slept on such an atrocious bed. There were springs digging into our ribs and hips like porcupine quills. We would have been better off sleeping (or not sleeping, as the case may be) on the floor. In a forest. On rocks. Eventually, my husband couldn't take it anymore and swapped with our son. Unfortunately, the upper bunk bed had a mattress so thin that he eventually got up with the grooves of the bed's slats marked on his hips. Not even my 24kg son could find a comfortable spot on the double bed.
Eventually, with everyone but my 3 year old awake and unable to get comfortable, we left at 4am - forfeiting our breakfast and key deposit - in favour of getting the hell out of dodge. This departure was by far the highlight of our stay.
I find it impossible to believe that this is a four star establishment and feel that the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa must have visited another place entirely.
In short, it is impossible to sleep in a family log room at The Wild Farm Backpackers, unless you are an exhausted 3 year old. Despite it's lovely location, I will never go back or recommend it to anyone. Uninspired staff, promise more than they do by Elizabeth Vlaming 09 March 2018 We were here for only two days instead of four. Left earlier because we didn't like the place and the people. Breakfast was not much more than bread. Not a nice warm place like the Beach Backpackers were we went to after two days. That was heaven! THE WILD FARM JEUGHERBERG LIGGING
