When the world was still young, some 3500 million years ago, molten rock forced its way through the earth's crust and solidified to form the spectacular granite outcrops where Pretoriuskop Rest Camp is now nestled. The impressive granite dome known as ?Shabeni Hill? is not far from the camp, which is found in the southwestern corner of the Kruger National Park.
It is immediately apparent to any visitor that Pretoriuskop is unique as brilliant red trees adorn the camp, pre-dating the decision to make exclusive use of indigenous plants in laying out rest camp gardens. Nostalgia prompted an exception to the rule for Pretoriuskop, the Kruger National Park's oldest rest camp, and exotic flowering plants were allowed to stay, enhancing the strong sense of the past that is so pervasive.
Other useful information at this rest camp:
- You will be sharing your stay with many exciting and unusual creatures but without knowledge some of them could be dangerous, including bats, spiders, snakes, scorpions. If you must walk around at night, a torch is advised.
- Malaria zone.
- Kruger is in a summer rainfall area. Such precipitation is usually convectional and can result in heavy downpours. The summer months (October to April) are hot and often balmy. Winters are warm and mild, although visitors going on night-drives will require warm clothing.
- Consumption of alcohol is prohibited in all areas except booked accommodation/camping & restaurants.
PLEASE NOTE: the rates are subject to the number of adults and children staying. Quotes will include the 1% Community Levy, but will exclude daily conservation fees, which are to be paid directly to camp on arrival. Members with valid Wild Cards are exempted from daily Conservation Fees.
PLEASE NOTE: from 1 September 2017, all visitors over 18 years old will be required to produce their identity document (ID), passport or alternative valid identification e.g. driver's licence card for scanning upon entering/exiting the Park.
