Perfectly situated stopover, next to the N1 and near Colesberg, for travellers from Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal to the Cape, Kuilfontein Stable Cottages offers superior Provencal-style accommodation in a delightful converted stable block. The historic former racehorse stud farm has been in the Southey family since 1875. Leigh and Penny Southey, and their staff, are renowned hosts - and guests who stay here often become friends.

Kuilfontein has been in the Southey family for five generations, and has borne witness to a rich history, from wars, to drought, and floods. The original homestead was built in 1818, and the present family took ownership in 1875. It has been an ostrich and sheep farm, and racehorse stud and today is a mixed farming operation that produces South Africa's world's famous Karoo lamb. There are still herds of the original spring buck roaming the plains.

The feed room was the original feed and tack room of the stable block. A fusion of country and contemporary cuisine is served on gleaming yellowwood tables by a resident chef using the farm's produce whenever possible. Start your day with a health breakfast of cereals, muffins and scones, farm butter, and homemade jam. And for winter dinners, treat yourself to the farm's specialty of succulent Karoo lamb or venison.

An unexpected surprise by

An experience that will linger in our minds for a long while. The snug rooms due to their nature are yet comfortable. Leigh and Penny were out of the country when we visited, but we were phoned up long ahead of our arrival for confirmation. It rained and the power went down on the night we stayed at Kuilfontein, and we can only have words of praise for the excellent manner in which the young staff conducted themseves in difficult circumstances, both the evening and the morning after. We had breakfast by caddlelight. Is their such a thing? A big 'Thank You' to them.

Two happy Swedes by

Just a friendly and wonderful place to stay.

Hospitality, friendliness of management and staff, good cheerful service by

For a mid-trip stop this is ideal. An earlier option for breakfast(6am in summer) would be the only change I would suggest.

Perfect pamper before returning home by

It felt like we were in a Western movie, staying in a lovely desert town: sundowner drinks with the other guests, stars of the Karoo sky, amazing food including roasted lamb & home made preserves. The room was classy & had lovely small touches. The hostess, Penny, & her staff were generous & friendly.

It was great chatting to the owner Penny and the other guests by

Nice bar area, excellent food. Accommodation was good - maybe the flooring of the shower could be improved
